A creepy man in New York was filmed harassing two women at Washington Square Park after he saw them playing the harp together.
The situation gained attention after one of the two women shared a video that was viewed by more than one million people. In the footage, the man stood in front of the women and moved closer to them. At one point, he appeared to try to touch them, prompting one of the women to tell him to back off and remind him that her friend was not doing anything to him.
A bystander asked the woman if she was recording and encouraged her to keep filming because of what was happening. The situation then escalated when the man suddenly reached out and pushed the woman while she was recording the encounter.
Once again, the man reached out and tried to attack the two women. That prompted the woman who was filming to chase after him while calling him names and asking why he was picking on two women who were simply playing the harp. The video ended shortly afterward, but she later provided additional details in the caption. According to her, bystanders eventually stepped in to help them, and the man was later arrested.
As viewers asked for more context, the woman later shared a follow-up video describing what happened before the filmed confrontation. She explained that she was visiting New York City and that her friend had invited her to play the harp with her while busking. While they were performing, they noticed the man standing nearby and watching them for approximately 15 minutes.
After a while, the man allegedly approached the two women and began making strange remarks to them. He told the woman, “You are wasting your life, you know?” He then turned to her friend and said, “You are wasting it even more than she is wasting it.” She said the man then told both of them that they were not supposed to be there. Afterward, he sat down next to her and called her a “demon.”
At that point, the woman asked the man to leave them alone. That was when the harassment escalated. She said he began calling the two women “racists” and “demons,” and also told them that he hoped they would get cancer. The woman further alleged that while making these remarks, the man repeatedly circled around them and whispered in their ears.
The woman then said that the man then approached her and knocked her hat off her head. After that, he walked away, leading both women to believe that the situation was over. However, he later returned and escalated the confrontation. She alleged that he began touching them, attempted to take their money, and also tried to grab the harp. It was at that point that the woman decided to start recording.
She explained that she began chasing the man as he circled around them because she wanted to give her friend enough time to pack up her belongings so they could leave. When they attempted to leave the area, the man prevented them from doing so. She said that was when they started raising their voices. A couple then approached and intervened, attempting to stop the man from continuing to harass the two women.
The woman then showed additional footage that appeared to show the man circling around them. He was repeatedly trying to get past the couple who had stepped in to help. Another bystander then approached the scene and said that he was on the phone with the police after witnessing what was happening.
At that point, park police arrived and the two women informed them of what had been happening. As officers spoke with the man, the women began to leave the area. Suddenly, someone screamed from behind them. When they turned around, they saw the man running toward them. Fortunately, NYPD officers were close behind the women. They were able to intervene and restrain the man before anything further could happen.
The two women then gave their statements to the police as the man was arrested. Officers later told them they were taking him to a mental hospital. They said he was not providing clear or consistent information. She also shared that both she and her friend were deeply affected by the incident. The woman added that they decided to press charges following the attack.
