A woman in New York City, New York, found herself struggling to breathe during the night for several days. Then, she checked under her bed and reportedly found a giant mushroom, and her floor was covered in spores. Now, she is looking to move out of her apartment after just weeks.
Amelia Axel shared the mushroom story on TikTok. She normally posts a variety of content online, mostly lifestyle videos and, most recently, her move into what is now her apartment. While the clip attached above is a follow-up, the initial post, which showed the mushroom in question, went viral, garnering 12.1 million views, 934,000 likes, and more than 7,000 comments.
The New York woman captioned the carousel, explaining that she had been unable to breathe for two nights. She said that she ended up spending all morning in urgent care, where the medical staff was unable to tell her what was wrong with her.
Then, Amelia checked under her bed and found a giant mushroom and what appeared to be white spores all over the floor.
Moving In, Moving Out
In an initial follow-up, she detailed that, before moving into the apartment, the leasing company had inspected it. Then, once she moved in, she cleaned her room before putting a rug down, and she saw no mushrooms whatsoever. The chest tightness began to manifest, and she felt like there was a “film” over her lungs. This eventually led to the urgent care visit and the subsequent mushroom finding.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been more freaked out in my entire life,” Amelia said. “It looks like something out of a horror movie.”
The woman did some digging. The girl who lived there before her told her about a mold problem in the apartment that had been fixed. By the looks of it, it seems like the mold issue wasn’t fully taken care of. The woman filmed the mushroom and the spores up close. Additionally, she also recorded what appeared to be a leak right next to the mushroom.
In yet another follow-up, the New York woman said that the mushroom and the spores had been cleaned up. However, she was told that, if the mold issue is confirmed, her apartment is going to have to be vacated, resulting in her receiving her deposit back and her June rent. Meanwhile, she is looking to move out and into another apartment in the area.
Commenters Weigh In
Amelia’s mushroom story sparked multiple responses, most of them from shocked and worried viewers. One said, “Mold illness is so real!” Another one commented, “Genuinely in utter shock and disarray over this.”
Others decided to have a bit of fun out of the situation. One wrote, “Have you been making clicking noises lately perchance?” Another one added, “Some olive oil, salt, and pepper on high heat for about 20-25 minutes.”
According to the most recent update, it appears that, at least in the section where the mushroom was found, there was no mold. However, a mold inspector has yet to check Amelia’s apartment, but she will move out regardless.
