Grocery runs, gas station visits, big-box store hauls – most of us film these moments to kill time, not to make a statement. But every once in a while, someone will bring their camera along on the smallest of errands and get caught up in the debate.

Take, for example, the situation that occurred when a man in Illinois decided to pull out his camera in a parking lot and couldn’t quite process what he was looking at.

Liberal man becomes FURIOUS over Bass Pro Shop putting up tons of American flags for the country’s 250th birthday.

Who gets this triggered over a flag..!? Lmao pic.twitter.com/NUCRfPNr5T

The video shows a man in a blue T-shirt walking through the parking lot and entrance of a Bass Pro Shops store in East Peoria, Illinois. He’s surprised by the hundreds of small American flags placed along the roads, medians, and entrance.

“What the hell is this? I’ve never seen so many American flags ever in my entire life,” he says in the video.

He then adds, “I’m not confused about what country I’m in right now, but there’s more, kids. Not the bathrobe shops. What the hell? I’m afraid to go inside.”

The clip has been widely shared on social media and has sparked reactions from people across the political spectrum.

The flag display appears to be part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations. This year, many retailers, city parks, and private businesses across the country have decorated with patriotic displays.

Bass Pro Shops, which is known for celebrating American outdoor culture, also put up large flag displays at its stores. The difference between the store’s patriotic display and the man’s surprised reaction helped turn a normal shopping trip into a viral moment.

Internet Reacts to Illinois Bass Pro Shops Flag Video

Commenters were largely unsympathetic to the man’s reaction, with many defending the display outright.

“It’s on private property … you don’t get to complain! Don’t like it … there’s the exit!” one commenter wrote. “He’s afraid to go inside? WTF? Ooooooo, those scary flags! Those happy people, shopping!” another said, mocking the man’s tone in the clip.

“It’s called 250 YEARS of celebration for our country you buffoon!!” a third commenter added.

Others went further, questioning his motives entirely. “More performative outrage from a failed theater kid. Wants to be the center of attention,” one person wrote.

A few commenters framed the backlash as a broader point about patriotism itself. “True freedom includes others loving your country, not going crazy just because you don’t like it,” another wrote.

As of this writing, the man has not publicly responded to the criticism. It is also unclear whether he made the video as a serious comment or as a joke for his followers.

In any case, the clip has become one of the most talked-about viral moments from Illinois this week, with new comments continuing to flood in.
