Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes, but one Indiana resident wanted to put their gay neighbors in their place. The best they could do was vandalize the LGBTQ+ home’s trash can with the words “Gay Residense.” Unfortunately for them, the homeowners found the vandalism more humorous than offensive and fired back in their own witty way.
Next to the trash can, the gay couple put up a sign thanking the vandal for the “5-star review.” This was satire, of course, as the homeowners also mocked the graffiti artist for their incorrect spelling and challenged them to explain themselves via mail. For now, the drama between the residence and the neighbor ends here, as Reddit user Chlo3k, who shared a photo of the scene, wasn’t able to add any follow-up context in her r/SignsWithAStory post.

One Redditor wondered whether there was a family with the last name “Gay,” and the vandal labeled the wrong trash can. Chlo3k clarified that the house has a pride flag hanging out front, so there’s no doubt that the “Gay Residense” vandalism was meant for them. OP also claims to be a lesbian herself and finds her home in Indianapolis to be fairly welcoming, though she says the state still has its fair share of ‘non-allies.’
“Not that surprising, I live in Indiana and have had people get very vocal about me wearing pride stuff but it was at its worst in Indianapolis,” sighed a commenter. “This is hilarious because like it’s not a slur or anything just a statement of fact,” remarked another. “Well, when life gives you bigots, make the best of it!” exclaimed a third.
Regarding the comment criticizing Indiana for being anti-Pride, this should come as no surprise, considering the state is reportedly conservative. While Indiana is not in the alleged Top Ten list of most conservative states, the Conservative Move reports that “Donald Trump carried it comfortably in 2024.” That being said, based on their response to their trash can being vandalized, the ‘gay residence’ in Indianapolis is proud of who they are and is staying put.
