A California woman is attracting a bunch of flak online after sharing a TikTok video of her neighbor’s wall and her offer to paint it.
Posted on her TikTok, Joannaolandt, Joanna had posted three videos, starting with what the wall looks like and what she was offering to do. “It is so hideous,” Joanna says in her original post. She shares a picture and although it’s a nice enough wall, the paint job is all over the place.
In her TikTok video, Joanna explains that it’s all she ever sees when she looks out her windows, so it’s kind of a bummer. Not to mention it takes up a lot of the neighborhood. Her solution: She wants to paint it herself and she’ll buy all the equipment. She doesn’t want to charge the neighbor at all.
In her second video, Joanna then shares a short and sweet letter she planned on giving to her neighbor. She reiterates the same points, wanting to paint it on her dime and being quite friendly about it.
She writes in the caption of her third video: “POV: apparently I’m not delivering the letter.” The response was so horrible, she rips up the letter.
What was most surprising, and why the comment section to one of her TikTok videos on the topic was disabled, was the rather mean-spirited comments left behind. It seemed some viewers somehow took issue with her wanting to do something nice for another neighbor.
Viewers were torn by Joanna’s friendly offer
One TikTok user, Carringtonmelissaaa, was on the same wavelength. She couldn’t grasp the reason for the “theatrics” of people being “offended” by Joanna’s offer. In response, another user argued that it’s because it wasn’t Joanna’s property and called her offer an “overstep.” OP fired back that neighbors do nice things for each other all the time—this shouldn’t be any different.
Other viewers took the letter as a form of criticism, despite the fact her letter did none of that and was short and rather sweet. This prompted TikTok user Bebe to insist Joanna send the letter anyway. “If they get offended, that’s on them,” they wrote.
Several commenters were otherwise open to the idea, even wishing Joanna was around to paint their walls. “All the comments are weird. Hell yeah, you could pay for a free paint job on my wall. Have at it. You could do my house too if you want,” wrote TikTok user Grumpy irl.
Many of Joanna’s viewers definitely went overboard with their bizarre takes. It was a neighbor wanting to do something nice for another and it somehow resulted in death threats, according to Joanna. Why sense is there discouraging that?
