The only thing more complicated than Baldur’s Gate 3‘s branching story is the relationship drama that players can find themselves in. Whether your Tav only has eyes for one person or has a bit of a roving heart, the game offers a rich variety of relationships. Every companion in Larian‘s masterpiece has their romantic merits, leading many players to wonder if monogamy is the only option. Further, each act brings new challenges to your relationships, regardless of whether you wish to pursue one companion or several. So can you romance multiple characters in Baldur’s Gate 3? Here’s everything you need to know.

Yes, you can romance multiple characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, but not all characters will look at such actions favorably. Just like in real life, everyone wants something different from a relationship. Some characters will not accept a polyamorous relationship and will dump you for pursuing one. If you’re with a character who doesn’t agree to share, you won’t be able to seek other romantic partners. At least, not without angering your current partner and ending the relationship. Since your romance options are your party members and travel together, there’s no question of hiding relationships.

Things get much more complicated when you get to specifics of compatibility. Some characters, like Gale and Wyll, prefer to have Tav all to themselves. Others, like Shadowheart and Karlach, are open to poly at first but decide they don’t want other partners after Act 1. Astarion, Halsin, and Minthara, meanwhile, are open to romances with multiple partners, assuming everyone gets along. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a complicated game, to say the least, and players are still discovering new things about the conditions behind each relationship. If you want to romance multiple characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, your best bet is to pay close attention to dialog and body language.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
