Miley Cyrus’s Song Flowers Is Personal To Her

[Updated on September 2, 2024 – Fact-checked and updated links]

Miley Cyrus’s song Flowers came out on Friday, January 13. The date also coincided with the Hannah Montana alum’s ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday.

Miley is one of the three writers credited for the song alongside Gregory Aldae Hein and Michael Pollack. Since its release, fans have brought forward possible interpretations of the song.

Lines like “I can buy my own flowers” and “I can hold my own hand” are believed to be Miley’s response to her divorce from the Hunger Games actor.

Mikey Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth dated on and off for ten years before tying the knot in 2018. However, the marriage lasted only nine months before the pair called it quits. The exes finalized their divorce in January 2020.

Meanwhile, fans continue to appreciate Miley’s strength after the divorce.

“I love that this song is a message of carrying/continuing on beyond Liam by reminding yourself of your worth,” one social media user wrote in the comments section of the music video.

One stanza of the song also mentions a couple who “built a home and watched it burn.” Fans took it to refer to Miley and Liam’s Malibu mansion, which burned down in a November 2018 wildfire one month before they exchanged vows.

Dolly Parton is Proud of Miley Cyrus

Meanwhile, Dolly Parton is proud of Miley’s latest work. The 76-year-old gushed about her goddaughter Miley’s talent and her new single.

“I love that song. Miley is so great. I mean, I just am so proud of her as a singer and songwriter,” she told Us Weekly on Tuesday, January 17, while promoting her new Duncan Hines baking collection.

The Jolene singer said she wasn’t sure who wrote it but believes Miley was a major contributor.

“It was her story, if not her actual writing.”

Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton keep close. The duo recently co-hosted Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, ringing in 2023 with duets of Jolene, I Love Rock n’ Roll and Wrecking Ball.

Miley and Dolly were an energetic duo, and the Coat of Many colors singer confessed that performing with Miley means “you’re gonna sing your ass off.”

Miley Cyrus continues to get better at her craft, but it is also important that she heals fully from her divorce. Hopefully, the Disney alum will heal fully if she hasn’t.
