The Dune hype train ceases to halt. Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation received critical acclaim; Frank Herbert’s novels are selling at a decent rate; the franchise is getting a lot of reception from fans young and old. And now, a survival game is in the works with two development studios at the forefront. Funcom – the guys behind Conan Exiles and Mutant Year Zero – has brought along NUKKLEAR to help bring the new Dune game to life.
A New Dune Video Game for Fans to Look Forward to
Back in 2019, Funcom acquired the rights to create a Dune game based on Frank Herbert’s series of novels. Set in an online survival universe within the same fashion as Conan Exiles, the scope for the Dune game began to increase through a government grant. Additionally, Tencent provided funds as well to assist with the development and production processes. Funcom has been working ever since, but to no attention from the public as of yet.
That was the case until today, however. To boost the game’s creation, German-based studio NUKKLEAR has joined the team. Known for helping top-name studios and their titles (from Destroy All Humans to Everspace), NUKKLEAR is the second developer to work on the Dune project. Kirk Lenke, CEO of NUKKLEAR, commented on the team-up of Funcom and NUKKLEAR, saying:
We’re grateful to Funcom for bringing us on to help bring Dune to a new audience. We’ve supported and collaborated on many projects over the years, but taking on Dune is by far the biggest yet. Our team welcomes the challenge and is confident in the expertise that NUKKLEAR brings to the table.”
There seems to be plenty of trust and love between Funcom and NUKKLEAR. To tackle a big-name project like Dune is quite ambitious, but we’re excited to see what they’ll be cooking up in the near future for us. But what are your thoughts?
