An adorable Camp Follower you can add as a pet to your party in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Owlbear Cub, a hybrid beastie that owl fans will adore. As you know, possible companions join the camp after performing certain actions that inspire trust and commitment to you. The Owlbear Cub is no exception, and you need to win it over before it joins your group as a pet.
How to Tame Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3
Your first encounter with Owlbear in Baldur’s Gate 3 will occur in his nest, where you can meet its mother. The nest is located north of the bridge between Druid Grove and the Blighted Village at the coordinates X: 85, Y: 445.
When you encounter the Owlbear’s mom, you have two options: peaceful or aggressive.
- The peaceful way: Use your Speak with Animals or Animal Friendship spells to calm animals and gain their trust. However, if you get too close, the fight will start anyway, and you’ll have to kill Owlbear’s mom.
- The aggressive way: Regardless of whether you passed the dialogue check or not, you’ll be fighting with Owlbear’s mom. Once you kill the mother, don’t hurt the cub to tame it in the future. If the mother remains alive, she will be killed by the local goblins who hunt her anyway.
Once you have completed this stage of interaction with Owlbear Cub, you will need to go to camp and use the long rest to continue this storyline in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Rescuing Owlbear Cub in the Goblin Camp in BG3
The Owlbear will eventually relocate to a goblin camp located to the west of the Blighted Village. Once you get there, you will need to go through the guards at the entrance. To enter the camp, use social manipulation, and then the guards will let you in. Once you are inside, go to the left. There, you can notice Owlbear surrounded by goblins, and as soon as you get closer, it will trigger Krolla, and you can start a dialog with her.
While talking to her, she will want you to play a local game called Chicken Chaser. Now you have two options to choose from, namely:
- You agree to play the game by betting 30 gold, and if you win, you will receive 75 gold.
- You will refuse to play the game, saying that you think it is too cruel to animals.
Regardless of your choice, it will lead to the same result, and you will return to Krolla to talk to her again. When you talk to Krolla again, you can say that you want to take the Owlbear Cub, and you have several options to achieve the desired result in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Intimidate.
- Persuading.
- Use Illithid-mind-control.
- Bribe her for 500 gold.
- Kill all the goblins in the camp.
Regardless of your choice, after the conversation, you will have to approach the Owlbear Cub to talk to it and let it smell you so that it can find your camp later.
Final Taming of the Owlbear Cub
Eventually, when you free the Owlbear Cub from the goblins, it will run away into the forest, but don’t worry, that’s not the last time you’ll see it. In the future, you will have three more encounters with the cub at night near your camp:
- First encounter: The cub will come hungry, and you will need to feed it.
- Second encounter: The cub will come wounded, so use a medicine check to heal it.
- Third encounter: The cub will bring a dead bird and offer you to eat it. Pretend to eat the bird so that Owlbear will consider you its friend.
When you complete all these steps, Owlbear Cub will become your companion in Baldur’s Gate 3, and you can take him with you on various adventures as an ally.
To recap, here’s how you recruit the Owlcub:
- Defeat the Owlbear Mother in the nest at X: 85, Y: 445.
- Free the Owlbear Cub from the goblin camp.
- Interact with the cub when it visits your camp.
