The Columbus Blue Jackets had a rough season last year. However, the franchise has just been devastated with more horrible news. The Jacket’s forward, Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew passed away last night after being struck by a drunk driver. The two brothers were out for a bike ride when the incident occurred. The NHL team made an official announcement on Friday, August 30th. The hockey world mourns the death of one of its rising stars.
According to Yahoo Sports, the drunk driver allegedly tried to pass two other vehicles before hitting Johnny Gaudreau and Mathew on County Road 551 in New Jersey. The driver of the SUV that hit the brothers was Sean Higgins. He is currently being charged with two counts of death by auto and is being held at Salem County jail. “The hockey world will be hurting for a long time,” as Hockey fans worldwide have reached out via social media to mourn Johnny and Matthew.

“Wow, this is gut-wrenching. Rest in peace, Johnny and Matthew. Also, pray for their sister who was supposed to get married either today or tomorrow,” a fan wrote.

“Man, I was hoping this wasn’t true. Absolutely terrible,” stated another fan.
One fan wrote, “Absolutely awful. My heart goes out to his family. RIP Johnny Hockey.“
The Daily Mail also reports that other athletes have reached out. LeBron James left a heartfelt message expressing his “thoughts and prayers” for the Gaudreau family. Everyone seems to understand how unnecessary this horrible incident was.
Johnny Gaudreau was one of the Columbus Blue Jackets’ best players. With the remarkable play on the ice and even better behavior off of it, Johnny Hockey and his brother Matthew will surely be missed. Another young star has gone too soon.
