The wildfires going on in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles have been devastating, taking the lives of many and burning hundreds of structures to the ground. Despite these negativities, many capable people are willing to lend a hand to ensure that the relief efforts will see many of the victims bouncing back before too long. On the other hand, there are also many lawyers and judges looking toward the state’s law practitioners to set lawsuits against public officials and others directly responsible for the LA fires.
More specifically, famous television judge Judge Judy’s son, Adam Levy, who now serves as a creator on Tribunal Justice, a reality court show, hopes to see lawsuits coming. In an interview with Fox News, he also comments on certain legislation, stating that the system needs to change.
“I hope so. I do. But, you know, the problem is that when there are lawsuits filed, as the lawsuit that was recently filed down in New Orleans and the Bourbon Street massacre, if there is a judgment, if you can overcome issues of sovereign immunity and if you can overcome issues of third-party liability for the criminal conduct, right, of third parties and the issues of foreseeability which always come into play, taxpayers pick up the tab. I think that system has to change.”
This devastating LA fire impacts many victims, with many unable to even find places to stay and wait out the flames. Fortunately, it is very possible that the lawsuits pointing at public officials that Judge Judy’s son was talking about will start cropping up soon, as there is already one in response to the Eaton fire. The lawsuit blames Southern California Edison for failure to comply with electrical and fire safety standards, resulting in the fire.
Ideally, government officials will soon step in and offer a relief plan for those who are suffering. Unfortunately, the victims are told to wait patiently as those in charge figure out what to do next. However, whatever decision is made will likely fall into the hands of the next Administration despite what Adam Levy hopes for.
