Kevin Costner Recalls Battling the Royal Family Following Princess Diana’s Death
However, Diana’s tragic death in 1997 put a stop to the movie’s plans, as Costner admitted he didn’t want to replace the princess in the film. Following her passing, the actor found himself embattled in a feud with the royal family.
“When Diana passed, about a year later it had leaked out that I was prepping Bodyguard 2 with her. And what happened was, the royal family kind of turned on me a little bit,” Costner said during an interview with The Howard Stern Show, per OK! Magazine. “Like, ‘No, that’s not true.’ And it got actually kind of ugly,” Costner continued. “And I let it go for a while. It just got uglier and uglier.”
“Finally I called up Sarah [Ferguson], and said, ‘You need to tell me who is leading the charge there on this thing. She goes, ‘No, no, no, Kev, you don’t want to talk to them.’ I said, ‘Yes I do.’ I called them up and I said, ‘I’m telling you something, you need to stop because it is true. And if you don’t stop, I’m gonna start. Because it was,'” he stated.
Kevin Costner also recalled the meetings he had with Princess Diana about the role. He remembered the late royal asking for a romantic scene in the movie. The actor also admitted how sweet she was. Sadly, her untimely death not only robbed the world of her presence but also her acting debut.
