If, like me, you grew up watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch in the 90’s, you may want to note the reboot’s release date on your calendars.

Netflix has officially announced that the reboot – titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – will be on your screens on 26th October 2018 (just five days before Halloween! Because she’s a witch. Get it?)

The series will center around its eponymous heroine, played by Kiernan Shipka, as she attempts to reconcile her dual nature as half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the forces of darkness.

Of course, she is a teenage witch and so, she must also balance her supernatural escapades with her normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Unlike the 1996 series, Sabrina will live in the fictional town of Greendale (Where she lives in the comics. The other series had Melissa Joan Hart’s Sabrina based in Boston).

Sabrina

In the comics, Greendale is said to be near Riverdale. Due to the shared universe between Sabrina and Archie, the producers had originally envisioned the show as a spin-off based in the same TV universe.

However, this was cast into doubt once Netflix picked up the show. It was originally going to go to the CW where Riverdale primarily airs in the United States. However, Netflix’s two-season deal for Sabrina was too much for the producers to pass up.

Despite this, some hope for a crossover remains. Executive producer Jon Goldwater (who also happens to be the CEO of Archie Comics) has said that “You never know. Maybe”. After all, Sabrina’s hometown, Greendale, has been referenced plenty of times during Riverdale‘s second season.

Another thing to note is that during Supergirl‘s first season on CBS, it was initially doubtful that the Girl of Steel would be joining her superheroic TV contemporaries because their shows existed on a different network at the time (The CW). However, her show had the same executive producer, Greg Berlanti and this, alongside the enthusiasm among fans, paved the way for a Supergirl/Flash crossover in 2016.

So, never say never.

Regardless, we’ll be seeing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix this October.
