A Virginia mom faces backlash after saying it’s the teacher’s job to tie her kid’s shoes. A third-grade teacher posted the video on TikTok, commenting that it’s not a teacher’s responsibility to tie shoes. Her video has over 100,000 views, over 10,000 likes, and over 1,000 comments, with many calling out the mom for her “entitlement.”

In the video, the parent complains about her child tripping over her shoelaces when the teacher could “just [tie] the shoes.” The Virginia mom explains she’s tempted to send the teacher an e-mail. Other complaints include the teacher not liking that the shoes were too big for her child’s feet. She also states that her daughter said, “My teacher says she’s done with these shoes.” This statement has the mom riled up, saying that her daughter is only six and doesn’t know how to tie them. However, she feels the teacher was over the line for telling her daughter to “ask one of her friends” to do it for her.

She asked “am I trippin?” … YES! She didn’t like my response she either deleted it or hid the video because I got the error when I had a notification of someone responding to my comment. It’s the not the teachers job to tie shoes, fix shoes, provide shoes. Thats a parent’s job. #teacher #teacherlife #parentsoftiktok #parenting #tyingshoes

However, the Virginia mom’s video hasn’t been well-received. The teacher who shared the video states that in her classroom, “I don’t tie shoes.” She explains that when her children were younger, she bought them shoes that didn’t need to be tied. She says, “That’s not a teacher’s problem” and sees it as a parent’s responsibility. For example, she had a child in PE who didn’t have socks and had the laces out of his shoes flapping around. This meant he couldn’t participate in class for safety reasons. In this instance, it wasn’t on her to fix his shoes. She argues, “You are the irresponsible parent that did not provide your child with safe shoes.”

Virginia Mom Under Fire For Comments

Many parents state it’s their job to ensure their child has the right shoes. One says, “My kid can’t tie shoes yet. So we buy slip-ons because that’s MY responsibility, not the teacher’s.” Meanwhile, others are calling the Virginia mom out, saying, “These parents today have a lot of audacity and entitlement.” Another adds that teachers don’t have time to tie laces. They argue, “The thing is parents only think of their child… imagine a class of 25 kids, and you have to tie several shoes.”

Additionally, many teachers sound off in the comments. One thanks the third-grade teacher for speaking out. They say, “I’m a teacher, and I tie shoes a lot – thank you for this.” Another adds, “That’s not part of the curriculum!” Another teacher is fed up: “What do parents do at home now? They expect us to do it all at school, apparently!”

The Virginia mom hasn’t responded to the backlash and has since deleted the video off her TikTok channel.
