Outrage erupted online after a police officer in Texas was seen in a viral video warning a Christian street preacher that he could be ticketed over his remarks after the preacher said that “homosexuality is a sin.”
It was reported that the preacher was demonstrating at a Pride event, where he was preaching and saying that homosexuality was a sin. A female police officer then approached and confronted him. Video of the interaction quickly gained attention online, receiving more than six million views.
During the interaction, the officer told the preacher, “If someone is offended by your talking, then we have a problem.” The preacher responded that he believed this violated his rights. The officer then said she would issue him a ticket. “Wait, you are gonna ticket us for offensive speech?” a man accompanying the preacher asked. “Yes, absolutely,” the officer replied.
The officer then said the situation could be considered “disorderly conduct,” prompting a surprised reaction from the two men. The preacher responded by saying that he was a retired federal police officer. The officer replied, “it doesn’t do with local.” The video ended with the officer stating that if someone complained that the preacher’s language was offensive, she would issue him a ticket.
Additional interactions between the preacher and police officers were also shared online over his remarks at the event. In another video, a male police officer was seen speaking with the preacher and the man accompanying him. During the exchange, the officer told the preacher that free speech does not include offending somebody.
The preacher then asked whether he would be cited if he said that “homosexuality is a sin” or “[homophobic slur]” and someone was offended. The officer responded that such conduct could be cited. He also clarified that he was not the one who made the rules.
A third video continued the conversation between the preacher and the male officer. During the exchange, the preacher asked whether calling a biological male “sir” could result in a citation if the person took offense. The officer responded that it was a “gray area” and added that it could potentially become a citable offense if it was repeated.
The preacher then said he was offended by “seeing half-naked men running around children.” The officer responded that there was not much law enforcement could do about that.
A fourth video showed a police supervisor telling the preacher that he could not preach inside the barricaded area of the Pride event. The supervisor explained that if the preacher wanted to continue, he would need to do so outside the barricades rather than within the event itself.
The preacher asked the supervisor what would happen if they continued preaching inside the event. The supervisor responded that they would be arrested for trespassing. The preacher continued to argue before saying that the barricades were there to keep “Muslim terrorists” outside. This was interpreted by some viewers as an Islamophobic remark.
The discussion between the preacher and the police supervisor continued for several minutes. After the supervisor again stated that they would be arrested for trespassing if they preached inside the barricaded Pride event, the two men appeared to move outside the barricaded area.
Viewers Outraged Over Texas Preacher Being Denied at Pride Event
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers criticized the female Texas police officer’s handling of the interaction with the preacher. Some argued that he should have been allowed to express his views at the Pride event. “Frankly, I find this DEI cop extremely offensive. By her own rules, she needs to write herself a ticket on my behalf,” one person wrote mockingly. Another person said, “Viewpoint discrimination. The greatest first amendment sin.” Someone else argued, “The First Amendment protects freedom of speech but does not shield individuals from being offended by that speech. It allows for a wide range of expression, even if it is considered offensive or distasteful by some.”
Other viewers also criticized the officers while reacting to the incident, with some using homophobic language in their comments. “The cop should arrest the one who gave the permit if he’s got nothing better to do. It appears He’s doing what he is ordered to do according to the permit law. These cops are weak. They are looking exactly like the UK cops. Harassing Preachers and good citizens who care about the children being exposed to the abomination,” one person wrote.
The videos sparked a conversation about the limits of free speech and how laws regarding offensive or disorderly speech should be applied in public settings. They also led to broader discussions about the balance between the rights of individuals to express religious or political views and the rules governing demonstrations at public events.
