GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games of all time. With the unmatched success of its predecessor, Rockstar is bound to reach new heights with the sequel. Making a game at such a scale and level of detail takes a long time, but rumors suggest the game might have been in development for far longer than we may have expected.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, GTA 6 has been in the works since 2014 “in some form.” This means that only a year after the release of GTA 5, Rockstar had already started planning and possibly some level of development on its sequel. He didn’t go into further detail, so it’s not obvious what he meant by development.
The pace of development for GTA 6 has been slow, so much so that employees in Rockstar’s Edinburgh branch left the project blaming lack of progress as the main issue.
Details About the Game
A lot of rumors have been going around regarding where GTA 6 will take place, and it seems Rockstar’s version of Miami will be the next playground for GTA fans. GTA 5 set the trend of having multiple protagonists, and GTA 6 is expected to continue that with 3 new playable characters.
Leaks suggest that a female character will finally be playable. No GTA games prior to this have ever included a female protagonist.
Rockstar has only confirmed that the game is in development, all other details are merely leaks, rumors, and speculation. And so these details should be taken with a grain of salt until actually confirmed by the developers.
With the level of detail Rockstar aims for in its games, it is no surprise that they take this long to make. But conversely, the pandemic and restructuring that the company had to go through to improve the workplace environment was a major contributing factor as well. Here’s to hoping that all the wait is worth it when the game finally comes out sometime after late 2023.
