After all of the leaked set photos over the past few months, we finally have our first official look at Billy Batson’s alter ego, Shazam!:
The image above was an exclusive from Entertainment Weekly. It features Zachary Levi (Chuck) as our titular protagonist with Jack Dylan Grazer (IT) as Billy’s friend, Freddy Freeman. As you may or may not know, Billy Batson is a 14-year-old orphan who obtains the power to transform into the adult superhero known as Shazam.
While I’m still not entirely convinced on Shazam’s suit (to be fair, I wasn’t a huge fan of his suit anyway), this first look assures me that there is a focus on making a lighter-tone movie filled with fun moments. This will make Shazam! a stark contrast compared to anything we’ve seen in the DCEU thus far.
As we reported earlier, Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, Never Back Down) has joined the cast of Shazam! as The Wizard. The Wizard grants Billy his powers and acts as a mentor to the young hero. The role of the younger Billy Batson will be played by Disney Channel star Asher Angel.
Fans have been speculating whether or not we would see Black Adam (played by Dwayne Johnson) appear in the movie. While speaking with SYFY Wire about a possible cameo in Shazam!, Johnson said:
“I’m not in that one,”
“It’s Shazam and Black Adam and, with the way the DC universe works, we should — in theory — meet up on the big screen. But who knows.”
Although Black Adam won’t be making his debut with this film, Johnson has stated that the Black Adam solo movie is still happening.
