South Carolina Mom Calls Out Texas Roadhouse Customer, but TikTok Sides With the Stranger: ‘Leave the Woman Alone’

TikTok had a different verdict

A South Carolina mom has gone viral on TikTok after posting a video accusing an older woman of berating her family during dinner at a Texas Roadhouse. Instead of receiving the support she expected, many viewers sided with the older diner, criticizing the mom for how she handled her toddler’s behavior and for posting the confrontation online.

@amandatrhlin

Tonight was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we’ve ever had, and it had nothing to do with the restaurant. we had an unfortunate reminder that not everyone has patience for young children. Our 2-year-old had a few brief outbursts during dinner. We handled them the best we could, just like every parent does. A woman at a neighboring table decided that instead of ignoring it or speaking to management, she repeatedly yelled comments at us, called us terrible parents, and called my husband a jackass. After saying she was leaving, she continued engaging with us. When I told the manager we were simply waiting for her to leave so the situation could end, she sat back down and announced she thought she’d order dessert, seemingly just to prolong the confrontation. Here’s the thing: toddlers are allowed to exist in public. Families are allowed to enjoy a nice dinner. If you don’t want to be around children who may occasionally laugh, cry, or have a brief meltdown, there are plenty of adults-only establishments to choose from. I will never be ashamed to take my children out to restaurants. They deserve the opportunity to learn how to behave in public, and that only happens with practice. Most people understand that. A little patience and kindness toward families goes a long way. To the many strangers who smile at a frazzled parent, offer a kind word, or simply mind their own business: thank you. You make the world a much more welcoming place for families. I’d rather spend an evening helping a 2-year-old learn how to regulate big emotions than watch a grown adult fail to regulate her own. #growupkaren

The story was shared on the South Carolina mom’s TikTok account, @amandatrhlin, where she primarily documents her pregnancy and family life. While most of her videos receive modest engagement, the restaurant confrontation quickly gained more than one million views and thousands of comments as users debated who was in the wrong.

According to the South Carolina mom, what was supposed to be a family dinner became one of the most disappointing dining experiences she had ever had, not because of the restaurant but because of another customer. She said her 2-year-old had a few brief outbursts during the meal, which she and her husband handled as best they could. However, she alleged that a woman seated at a nearby table repeatedly yelled comments at them, called them terrible parents, and referred to her husband with an expletive. The South Carolina mom also claimed the woman initially said she was leaving but instead stayed and ordered dessert, which she believed was done to prolong the confrontation.

The South Carolina mom argued that toddlers have every right to be in public and that taking young children to restaurants is part of teaching them how to behave. She said she would never feel ashamed for dining out with her children, adding that families deserve patience and understanding while toddlers learn to regulate their emotions. She also thanked strangers who offer encouragement or simply mind their own business, saying those gestures make public spaces more welcoming for parents.

South Carolina Mom Faces Online Backlash

Despite her explanation, the online response was largely critical of the South Carolina mom. Many commenters said they sympathized more with the older diner, arguing that while young children naturally have meltdowns, parents should remove them from the dining area if they begin disturbing other guests. Many shared their own experiences raising children, saying they would step outside, take their child to the restroom, or even leave the restaurant until the child had calmed down.

Another major point of criticism was the decision to record and post the older woman on TikTok. One user wrote, “Leave the woman alone. Was it necessary to video her? Solve your problems without filming them.”

Many users also questioned whether the video showed the full story, saying they wanted to see how the child behaved before deciding who was at fault. Others argued that describing the incident as “a few brief outbursts” may not have reflected how disruptive the situation actually was.

Several commenters added that every paying customer deserves to enjoy a meal without repeated interruptions, even at a family-friendly restaurant such as Texas Roadhouse. While a smaller group defended the South Carolina mom, saying noisy children are to be expected in that setting, most agreed that parents should step in quickly when a child repeatedly disrupts other diners.

For many viewers, the story became less about one uncomfortable dinner and more about where parents should draw the line between teaching children how to behave in public and respecting everyone else’s experience in the restaurant.
