Suge Knight has brought attention to what he perceives as a double standard in the way fans and the public react to allegations of abuse against artists. In the latest episode of his Collect Call podcast, the music executive specifically pointed to the contrasting responses to Dr. Dre and Chris Brown’s past abuses. Knight argued that fans and the industry had largely accepted Dr. Dre’s journey from controversy to redemption. He highlighted how the 59-year-old rapper had awards named after him — including the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award — despite being accused of abusing multiple women.
“You can have a man that part of that secret society and they gonna given him an award. The Impact Award. The motherf***** beat up more b****es than anybody. This man get award for beating up women,” Knight explained.
On the other hand, the former CEO of Deathrow Records noted that the opposite was the case for Brown. Knight claimed that the public had been less forgiving toward the singer since his altercation with his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
“Chris Brown is stripped of his crown…he had a fight with one woman or he beat up one woman and they still casting stones at him. They don’t give him his cigar, they don’t let him come perform, they don’t let him pretty much win awards, but you can have an Impact Award with Andre,” Knight concluded.
