The 2024 election results have caused everyone to go into a frenzy. While Republicans are busy celebrating Donald Trump‘s victory, Democrats are reacting to Kamala Harris’ loss by posting emotional messages on social media. Another way they’ve been channeling their frustrations with politics is through music. Throughout the week, several artists and tracks have experienced a surge in Spotify streams as a direct result of the election. For example, Taylor Swift‘s most political songs have regained popularity.
Taylor Swift Fans React to 2024 Election Results
A fan account known as @SpotifySwiftie on X regularly keeps up with the singer’s streams on Spotify. Since Tuesday, Nov. 6, they’ve noticed Taylor Swift’s most political songs have been going viral on the music platform. One track that has experienced a boost in popularity this week is “Only the Young.”
On Monday, Nov. 4, the song received 46,971 streams. The following day, that number increased to 99,132. Then, after the 2024 election results came out, the song experienced a huge spike on Spotify by racking up 257,031 listens. Thursday was even better with 290,584. According to @SpotifySwiftie, the track’s streams on Nov. 7 were its best in two and a half years.
“Only the Young” dropped in January 2020 alongside Swift’s Netflix documentary, Miss Americana. The song, which references Donald Trump, addresses major political topics like gun violence and mass shootings. During the chorus, the pop star urges listeners to go out and vote if they want to see the country change. Swift wrote it after being inspired by the events during the 2018 midterm elections. In 2020, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris used “Only the Young” in a video advertisement for the presidential election.
Another one of Taylor Swift’s most political songs going viral right now on Spotify is “The Man.” Since the 2024 election results were revealed, it has accumulated 623,418 streams. The track is all about the sexist double standards in society. Many fans believe the lyrics were inspired by the singer’s feud with Scooter Braun. However, others have interpreted it to be about Trump. Notably, Kamala Harris used “The Man” in her presidential campaign.
In September, Swift endorsed Harris for president on Instagram following the politician’s debate with Trump. During a lengthy Instagram post, she called Harris a “steady-handed, gifted leader” who she believed would lead the country “by calm and not chaos.” Her message was not received well by Trump, who reacted to Swift’s endorsement by attacking her on social media.
Since Trump won the presidential race, Swift has yet to publicly address the results of the election.
