‘They Left the Evidence Sticking Out of Their Recycling Bin’: California Couple Says Neighbors Stole Their Groceries, Then Pretended Nobody Was Home

Times are hard for everyone, though some people feel entitled to take advantage of others because of that, as seen in a prime example in a neighborhood of Oakland, California. According to Reddit user AstronautSlothPhD, the people living across from him and his wife had stolen his grocery delivery and made quite the shameless display about it. To be fair, the food was initially misdelivered to the neighbor’s house, but what happened after that fact is what was so telling of these people across the street.

Delivery driver dropped our groceries at the wrong house and our neighbor took them inside and refused to answer the door 10 minutes later. They left the evidence sticking out of their recycle bin…

AstronautSlothPhD said that the photo the delivery driver left was clearly of the home across the street, thanks to his quick deduction. So, he went over to let the neighbors know about the mixup. “I rang the doorbell and then knocked, but they wouldn’t answer even though someone clearly had to be home to grab the groceries,” he recalled, confused why they’d take in the delivery so fast knowing it wasn’t theirs.

“What is shady, to me, is that they then pretended not to be home… so you kinda know they know…” AstronautSlothPhD wrote. What was worse of the proof that the neighbors had stolen the groceries: “They left the evidence sticking out of their recycle bin…” On OP’s r/mildlyinfuriating, he shared photos of these thrown-away boxes, with allegedly his name and address, label still stuck on.

Fortunately, the grocery service ended up refunding the order, which was a blessing for AstronautSlothPhD, considering he says he’s unemployed. Still, he couldn’t believe how unembarrassed his neighbor was about their blatant theft, and almost ten thousand Redditors agreed with him.

“I wouldn’t want the food back after being misdelivered,” remarked a commenter, to which OP responded that he “was honestly hoping they still had the box and just hadn’t opened it yet,” considering it was 10 minutes after the delivery arrived. “The audacity to pull something like that when you live directly across from street is crazy,” another user said in disbelief.

“This is good news. Now you know they’re horrible people and you can treat them as such,” said a third. Though the couple might have already known that, as OP says this is the second time the neighbors kept their packages. Countless people in the comments shared their own stories, saying a similar incident happened to them with someone else stealing their delivery.

Needless to say, this is beyond just some petty neighborhood drama. As Reddit suggests, if AstronautSlothPhD and his wife want the neighbors to stop their thieving, then the California authorities might need to get involved.
