A teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada, found that her students had been passing notes during her literature class and during a quiz. Instead of taking offense, the teacher was actually impressed, as the notes clearly showed that her students were really invested in the book they were reading. The internet thought so too, making the video viral.

The teacher’s name is Cheri Guy, and she shares teacher-related content with her 18,100 followers on TikTok. While she has had viral clips in the past, the one in question is the biggest, garnering 979,000 views, 270,800 likes, and 3,600 comments.

The Nevada teacher showed a piece of paper to the camera. She had found it lying on her classroom floor, and she revealed that her students were passing notes during class.

“Do you know the last time I’ve found notes? It’s been years,” Cheri said.

However, the best part was yet to come. She detailed that the class is currently reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and it appears that one of the students hadn’t read the book. So, during a quiz, the note passing began.

Cheri began reading what the students had written down on the piece of paper. They were discussing important plot points of the book, and they were thinking about what the characters might be feeling while reacting to the story’s beats.

The Nevada teacher, rather than feeling disappointed by the note passing, was impressed, even happy.

“They were passing notes about the literature. I call that a win. I’m a happy teacher,” Cheri said. “Were they cheating? Maybe. But they were writing notes about the literature. Fitzgerald would be so thrilled to know all these years later, people are still writing notes about him.“

A Win Indeed

The teacher’s clip sparked many responses online.

Most users matched the teacher’s enthusiasm and thrill. One viewer commented, “They were cheating without AI. There’s hope!” Another one said, “They can write!! And they’re talking about the book?!“

Others thought the students deserved a reward, with one user writing, “Honestly, they should get credit for this.” Cheri agreed, saying, “They did!” Others believed that piece of paper was now an invaluable treasure, with one viewer suggesting, “Frame it, put a date on it, for the archives.”

With such a whimsical tone, the teacher’s story and how the students behave convinced TikTok that it was a video worth pushing. Users agreed, finding the students’ fascination with The Great Gatsby an accomplishment in a world where reading books is often considered an archaic endeavor.

After sharing her story, Cheri took a plan to a teaching conference. It is safe to say that the sub will have great, literature-interested students under her care.
