According to the Miami Herald, the Trump administration canceled an $11 million contract with Catholic charities that was intended to help shelter and care for unaccompanied migrant children entering the United States. The funding had previously been provided through the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which operates under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and has supported such programs in Miami for years.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski later provided a statement for the Miami Herald. “The U.S. government has abruptly decided to end more than 60 years of relationship with Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Miami. The Archdiocese of Miami’s services for unaccompanied minors have been recognized for their excellence and have served as a model for other agencies throughout the country Our track record in serving this vulnerable population is unmatched. Yet, the Archdiocese of Miami’s Catholic Charities’ services for unaccompanied minors has been stripped of funding and will be forced to shut down within three months,” he wrote.

The news is gaining attention due to the Trump administration cutting funding tied to services for unaccompanied migrant children in Miami. The decision has sparked discussion about immigration policy and support for vulnerable groups, while also adding to broader conversations about tensions between the administration and Catholic institutions.

The news sparked reactions online. Many viewers expressed outrage following the decision by the Trump administration affecting Catholic charities in Miami, Florida. Others argued that government funding should not go to religious organizations in the first place, even in cases like the cuts affecting charities in Miami. “I hope you guys maintain this energy for the state of Florida funneling our tax dollars to religious schools through step up scholarships! They are robbing our public schools and most vulnerable students and sending the money to religious groups. That’s the real scandal some of you should be angry about!” one person wrote. Another added, “Yeah, I’m personally against any state sanctioned funding of religion. So while it’s gross that he’s cutting funds to a charity because of his personal beef with the Pope of all people. I also don’t think the church should have gotten funding in the first place.”

The decision by the Trump administration to cut funding for Catholic charities in Miami, Florida has remained highly controversial, prompting strong reactions and ongoing debate among the public.
