The teacher was standing outside the school with the students while appearing to speak to someone off-camera. As she begins walking toward the school with them, one of the children starts crying. At one point, she appears to hold the child’s hand in a forceful manner.
She then brings the student’s hand up toward her mouth and appears to bite it. Following this, the child begins screaming more intensely. A social media account alleged online that the student is a nonverbal autistic child. This has further intensified reactions and concern about the incident.
The Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools issued a statement addressing the video. “I am aware of a disturbing video circulating on social media that shows an RPS employee apparently biting a child in their care. I am absolutely horrified by this, as superintendent and as a parent. While I cannot comment on personnel actions, I want to assure our families and the public that I simply will not tolerate any such behavior at RPS, and I’ve taken every necessary step accordingly,” the statement read.
“Our motto is to ‘teach, lead, and serve with love’ and we failed in the most extreme sense to live up to that with this incident. I apologize to the student, their family, and the entire RPS community for this breach of trust and am determined to do everything in my power to ensure that it never happens again,” the superintendent added.
