It’s been three years since Korra and Asami got their happy ending in the Nickelodeon cartoon, The Legend of Korra. Now, the beloved television series will pick up right where it left off, in comic form.

Turf Wars takes place immediately after Team Avatar conquered Kuvira. The comic will tell the adventures of Korra and Asami in the spirit world, as well as the duos return to Republic City.

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars‘ choice of publishing a comic instead of another season or television series may confuse some, but it’s exactly what the team did after the conclusion of the original series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The first series comic arch published five different volumes that took place after the show aired. These comics answered plot lines fans desperately wanted to know the conclusion to in the show, like the fate of Zuko’s Mother, and created all new tales for fans to enjoy.

The Legend of Korra

Writer and co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino stated that the upcoming comic will feel like a fresh, new story, rather than a shoehorned expansion of a story that had reached a solid conclusion. The comic will still feature the same themes and history of the show but has established a new villain. Tokuga has quickly grown his gang of miscreants, exploiting Republic City’s crumbling infrastructure following the events of the original series.

Based on all of that, it looks like Turf Wars will start out with a healthy dose of well deserved time off and happiness for the Avatar, but will also get down to business quickly when they return to Republic City.

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars will be published by Dark Horse Comics, Featuring art by Irene Koh, Vivian Ng, and lettering by Nate Piekos. Keep an eye out in stores and online for part one of the comic, as it will be released August 8, 2017.
