Just one week after its launch on YouTube Red, Cobra Kai has been renewed for a second season.
Cobra Kai is set 30 years after Karate Kid (1984). Both William Zabka and Ralph Macchio reprise their roles as Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso, respectively. The rivalry between these two is reignited after Johnny decides to reopen the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. You can see the full trailer below.
Sony Pictures Television Studios was associated with the production of the new hit series, along with Overbrook Entertainment and Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions. President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, Jeff Frost put out this statement on the quick renewal:
“We are so elated with the performance of Cobra Kai and our incredible partnerships with Josh, Jon, Hayden and Overbrook and of course, YouTube Red. This has been a remarkable experience and the audience reaction only further validates what we already knew – that this team and series is exceptional and incredibly special”
Back in March, Ralph Macchio praised showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald on their handling of the classic franchise:
“The Karate Kid was Star Wars to them. They know more about the Karate Kid films and, certainly, the original film, than I know. It’s unbelievable. They are the ultimate Karate Kid fans on the planet. They had the idea to write and create what they believe the fans would want to see.”
If you haven’t seen this web series yet, I highly recommend you watch at least the free two episodes available on YouTube. It is a surprisingly fun show that will bring the nostalgia of the 1984 film back onto your screen.
