Britney Spears‘s biopic is finally a reality. After years of fans clamoring for their idol’s true story to be brought to the screen, it is finally happening. Britney confirmed the exciting news: “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.”
Universal Pictures secured the rights to Spears’ best-selling memoir The Woman in Me after a “highly competitive auction,” according to a press release. John M. Chu of Wicked will direct, while Marc Platt will produce. The casting details are yet to be announced as the project is still in the beginning phase. However, members of the Britney Army already have ideas of who can bring their favorite singer to life.
Sabrina Carpenter
With a thriving music career, earning her a “Pop princess” title, it is no surprise Sabrina Carpenter‘s name was one of the firsts in fans’ mouths. The 25-year-old is dominating the charts with the recent release of her hit songs, Espresso and Please Please Please. Her blooming career is quite reminiscent of Britney’s when she was younger. It also helps that Carpenter has some acting credits to her name. She previously starred in Disney’s Girl Meets World and Netflix’s Tall Girl. “Sabrina could be a cute choice, she can actually act – though the role would be different for her,” suggested one fan. For a bonus point, Carpenter covered Spears’ …Baby One More Time during her 2023 tour.
Sydney Sweeney
Another chosen name by The Britney Army is Syndey Sweeney. Since her breakout role as Cassie Howard in HBO’s Euphoria, Sweeney has dominated the screens. She has starred in several big-screen projects like Everyone But You and Madame Web. Her acting chops are not at all up for question, even though she isn’t so musically inclined. One follower shared a similar sentiment, writing, “Cast Sydney Sweeney in the Britney movie immediately. She absolutely nailed her portrayal of Reality Winner, so I know she’s up to the challenge.”
Addison Rae
Addison Rae is another fan favorite who many think will accurately bring Spears to life. Rae rose to fame due to her influence on TikTok but has since dominated the music and movie scenes. She released her debut single, Obsessed, in 2021, which made quite some waves. Earlier this year, she signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. The 23-year-old also has the acting scene under wraps thanks to her hit Netflix movie, He’s All That. “Addison Rae needs to play Britney Spears in the biopic. I’m so serious,” gushed one fan.
Tate McRae
Tate McRae’s selection as fans’ choice doesn’t come as a surprise, given her deep adoration for Spears. Both women have similar career beginnings as child actresses, but much more than that has drawn them together. In May 2024, the Toxic Singer interviewed McRae for V Magazine, and they discussed their love for music and dance. The Canadian singer called Spears one of her biggest muses. The 42-year-old also told McRae, You’re an incredible performer. I’ve seen some of your performances, and each one continues to top the next.” Fans surely agree with this, with one writing, “I need Tate McRae to play Britney Spears for her upcoming biopic….imagine the serve that would be. Tate is the only modern pop girl who radiates that Britney energy.”
Millie Bobby Brown
Finally on the list is none other than Millie Bobby Brown. The 20-year-old has a soft spot for Spears and has publicly declared her desire to portray the singer. She opened up about her wish during a 2022 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
“I want to play a real person and I think for me, Britney … [It] would be Britney Spears. I think her story, first of all, resonates with me. Just growing up in the public eye watching her videos, watching interviews of how when she was younger.”
She continued, “I see the scramble for words [in her interviews] and I don’t know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only.”
