Beloved music icon Cher has dug up a lot about her past in her new book, Cher: The Memoir, Part One. Most people probably don’t know that Cher married Gregg Allman at one point in time. Actually, their union only lasted nine days. In her memoir, Cher revealed the shocking reason for the quick split.
Cher Married Gregg Allman Days After Her Divorce From Sonny Bono
The pair got hitched in 1975. Recalling the short-lived romance, Cher said she couldn’t be sure if their relationship would have lasted or not.
“I didn’t know whether my relationship with Gregory would last or not. I was living each day as it came,” she said. “Then I found out I was pregnant, and we decided to get married.”
At the time, the music icon already had one son, Chaz Bono, whom she shared with her ex-husband Sonny Bono. After discovering she was pregnant with her second child, she said that the marriage with Gregg Allman was arranged within a few days.
It should also be noted that Cher married Allman just four days after her divorce from Sonny Bono was finalized. Cher and Allman got married in a quickie Las Vegas wedding. The new couple posed for a few photos before flying straight back home.
“I was no longer Cher Bono but Cher Allman, Gregory’s third wife,” she wrote in her memoir. “There was little about our wedding day that was romantic. There would be no honeymoon.”
Why Cher Divorced Gregg Allman After Nine Days
Unfortunately, their romance was destined for failure. The “Believe” singer wound upon finding a “plastic bag full of white powder” in Allman’s possession. Cher married Allman knowing that he struggled with substance abuse, but finding it was the last straw for her.
When she confronted her newlywed husband about the white powder, he lied to her and denied everything. She didn’t hesitate to move on and filed for divorce the next day.
Stepping back and thinking about the well-being of her children, Cher decided the best thing she could do was end the marriage and fast. After all, they had a baby on the way and Chaz Bono was only a young child at the time.
Apparently, Gregg Allman already planned on divorcing Cher too. She was informed by several friends that Allman was already making moves to leave her less than two weeks after they tied the knot.
That said, their split sent Allman to check into rehab. Ultimately, Cher turned to her ex-husband Sonny Bono for support. Although they never got back together, Cher and Sonny remained friends.
Cher: The Memoir, Part One hit shelves on November 19. It is also available in audiobook format.
