When Meghan Markle joined the royal family, she was forced to give up many parts of her old life, including her career. Now that her days as HRH are far behind her, it seems the Duchess is trying every avenue possible, including one the royal family likely doesn’t approve of: politics. “I’ve always said Meghan has her eye on a bigger gain; this isn’t the bigger gain. I’ve always said she has had her eye on politics,” Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, told The New York Post.
According to the former royal employee, Meghan Markle’s efforts and reported political aspirations are specifically motivated. “She is trying everything she can to make as much money as she can to support their lifestyle,” Burrell said. And the plans likely aren’t going over well with the Windsors. “[Harry and Meghan] are going against the royal family’s wishes. Queen Elizabeth specifically said ‘do not use your royal titles for commercial gain’ and that is exactly what they are doing … They are making up their own rules as they go along. As long as they can make money they will try everything.”
Meghan Markle’s Past Cash Grabs
There isn’t much money in being a disgraced royal, so since exiting as a senior member of the royal family, the Duchess of Sussex has tried multiple ventures to stay relevant and make money. There was her podcast, Archetypes, which ended after just over 10 episodes dropped, as well as her and Harry’s lucrative Netflix deal that has so far yielded only a handful of projects.
Most recently, Meghan Markle launched a lifestyle brand called American Riviera Orchard. Her first product under the new label was a jar of strawberry jam, which she sent to several celebrity friends in a marketing effort. What the Duchess does next remains to be seen.
