Modern Warfare, a reboot of the classic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, dominated the headlines last week with its announcement trailer. Along with the trailer, it was revealed that the upcoming reboot would not feature a traditional season pass and will support cross-play. Although fans rejoiced at the prospect of not having to purchase another risky season pass for a CoD title, they were left in the dark on how cross-play would work in the game. That was until now.

When asked about the cross-play in Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward Producer Candice Capen said (via Twitter):

everybody play with everybody play with everybody =]

Capen later expanded on that tweet, directing the fan to a Forbes article that explains the cross-play matchmaking for Modern Warfare in more detail:

Check out the Forbes write up on matchmaking, they explained it well ☺️https://t.co/zNSEieCadB

So, it looks like gamers on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4 will all be able to play Modern Warfare together. This is fantastic news for a franchise that has become a bit stagnant over the years and poised to change that with their next game. Rocket League and Fortnite are the two most notable games that implement cross-play. For both of these games, cross-play has helped keep these communities together and sped up the matchmaking process.

Speaking of Fortnite, the Forbes article mentioned above states that Modern Warfare will have a similar style of cross-play matchmaking in terms of pairing up players with their controller input methods. This means if you use a controller, you’ll be matched up with other players using a controller. If you’re someone who loves playing games on your PC via mouse and keyboard, you’ll only be matched up with other mouse and keyboard players. This keeps the experienced mouse and keyboard gamers from destroying the competition. As the Forbes article also states, it’ll be refreshing to be able to play with other platforms and not feel any pressure to purchase multiple copies of the game in order to play with friends.
