The third game of the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise, titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider, has been through many leaks and rumors leading up to today. From leaked title reveals to teaser trailers, it has been hard for Square Enix to keep a lid on information regarding the next Lara Croft adventure.

When the teaser trailer was first “officially” released last month, Square Enix said that the full reveal will be coming April 27th. Well, here is the first official trailer for Eidos-Montréal’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider:

Shadow of the Tomb Raider - The End of the Beginning [US] - ESRB

As you saw from the trailer, Shadow of the Tomb Raider seems to be one of the most gritty (and darkest) stories yet for the franchise. For more of what the game will be about, here is a quick synopsis from Square Enix:

“In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be.”

Eidos-Montréal Studio Head David Anfossi claims that Lara Croft will be challenged “in new and unexpected ways” and “Our team has created a diverse set of skills, combat techniques and equipment for players to master, and they’ll certainly need them if they hope to survive the deadly jungle environments and tombs.”

The reboot of Tomb Raider has been a monumental success for Square Enix. The first installment was a fantastic reintroduction back into Lara Croft’s world and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, improved on its predecessor in almost every aspect. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed whether or not this title will be presented at E3 this year, many are expecting Shadow of the Tomb Raider gameplay to be revealed at Microsoft’s E3 briefing.
