Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made the list of Hollywood’s “Biggest Losers” this year, marking one of their most embarrassing ordeals as their Netflix deal nears expiration. Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter released its list of Hollywood’s biggest winners and losers. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the latter list despite their elite status, marking a stinging punch to their pride. This slap comes at a delicate time for the duo as the prospect of a renewal of their multi-million dollar Netflix deal hangs by a thread.
While speculations suggest the streaming giant looks forward to ending the contract come 2025 given the couple’s failure to deliver solid content, there is no word yet from either party, leaving an overhanging cloud of uncertainty. In the wake of their embarrassing ranking among Hollywood’s “Biggest Losers,” royal expert Kinsey Schofield is discussing the impact of the slap on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Harry and Meghan Ranked Among Hollywood’s “Biggest Losers” Over Netflix Debacle
Speaking to Talk TV, the royal commentator noted that the Sussexes’ view of themselves as Hollywood elites makes the blow of falling on the “losers’ side” sting deeper. The couple made the list owing to several “flops” this past year, which THR alluded to in their stinging article. Dwelling on these points, Kinsey established that THR indeed had outstanding authority in the industry, making their rankings generally undisputable. Hence, the damning implication could leave Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s team activating damage control measures. The royal expert quipped,
“The Hollywood Reporter is basically the bible in this city. This has got to hurt Harry and Meghan personally, and it’s got to have William Morris Endeavor (WME), her current talent agency, scrambling to figure out their next steps.”
The outlet cited the couple’s Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, as well as the Duke’s Spare, criticizing both projects as “whiny.” They also slammed the Sussexes’ brand, describing it as “a sanctimonious bubble waiting to be popped.”
Mocking South Park Episode Set the Stage for Harry and Meghan’s Hollywood Downfall
Another contributor to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Hollywood disgrace is the 2023 South Park episode mocking the Sussexes’ “Perpetual victimhood,” and continuous quest for privacy despite seemingly putting themselves in situations that stir attention their way. In fact, that South Park episode titled The Worldwide Privacy Tour opened up the previously “untouchable” Sussexes to mockery, both on comedy stages, on social media, and in the tabloids. Thus began their Hollywood downfall.
Aside from the impact of these external forces on their Hollywood rankings, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have failed to secure impressive ratings on some of their projects since scoring mega deals with the likes of Spotify and Netflix. The former pulled the plug on their contract with the Sussexes two years back, with one top exec dubbing them “grifters.”
Meanwhile, Netflix has held up the deal so far, releasing newer projects like Polo, and Meghan’s upcoming show about gardening and culinary. Netflix’s Polo has proven to be another flop, with poor reviews mostly from animal activists, making yet another reason to toss Harry and Meghan on the biggest losers’ list. Unless Meghan’s cooking show magically does a hat trick upon its release, Netflix may have to cut its losses and move on from the duo come 2025.
