Hollywood veteran Jamie Foxx has finally shared the type of medical complication he suffered in 2023. The comedian/actor has been tight-lipped about the details of his health scare, which shocked the world last April. However, he revealed the truth in his new Netflix comedy special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…
Foxx reflected on the situation with his signature humor and plenty of tears, getting vulnerable with the audience. He shared that he suffered a brain bleed that eventually caused a stroke. The incident occurred while he was filming the movie Back in Action in Atlanta. The actor recounted the ordeal, saying:
“April 11, I was having a bad headache, and I asked my boy for an aspirin. I realized quickly that when you’re in a medical emergency, your boys don’t know what the f–k to do.”
Foxx explained that he lost consciousness before using the aspirin and woke up 20 days later in the hospital. He had no memory of what transpired but shared that his friends initially took him to a doctor. However, the medical practitioner did not notice any red flags and sent him home with a cortisone shot.
Fortunately, the Day Shift star’s sister, Deidra Dixon, sensed something was wrong with him. She took him to Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital, where doctors confirmed Foxx was having a brain bleed that caused a stroke. He needed immediate surgery to save his life, a terrifying situation he also reflected on with humor, per TMZ.
Jamie Foxx Jokes About Seeing ‘The Devil’ During His Coma
During his weeks-long coma, Foxx noted that his life did not flash before his eyes. Instead, he sensed that he was in a tunnel but did not see the light people always talked about. He had mixed reactions to the ordeal, stressing that he felt strangely peaceful yet concerned about the hotness, saying:
“It was hot in that tunnel. Sh–t, am I going to the wrong place in this motherf—? Because I looked at the end of the tunnel, and I thought I saw the devil-like, ‘Come on.'”
When he finally woke up from his unconscious state, Foxx realized he was in a wheelchair. Naturally, he was grateful to be alive, a sentiment he has repeatedly shared since his health scare. We previously covered that Foxx broke his silence on the medical emergency in August 2023 via Instagram. He shared a lengthy message about his recovery alongside pictures detailing his well-being.
The first snap captured Foxx wearing a white t-shirt, crocheted bucket hat, and aviator glasses. He held a pair of red Crocs while giving the camera his best smoldering intensity. The comedian looked better than ever in the picture and assured fans he was fine in the post’s caption. Foxx noted that fans were “looking at a man who is thankful.” He explained that he was starting to feel like his old self and thanked everyone for their well wishes. He stressed that it had been a “dark journey,” but he could finally see the light thanks to God.
Given his incredible recovery and ability to laugh about the incident, Jamie Foxx has plenty to be grateful for.
