Actress Rooney Mara is expecting her second son with her fiancé, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix. Mara was attending the premiere of La Cocina at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday when she was photographed in a long black dress with her yoke silhouette impaired by a majestic baby bump.
Mara and Phoenix met on the set of Her in 2012. From their four-year-long friendship blossomed a romantic relationship during the production of Mary Magdalene. The pair became engaged in 2019, but although they were due to be wed later that year, the ceremony never happened.
Phoenix and Mara Share a Son Named After Phoenix’s Late Brother
The couple have one son, River, who was born in August 2020. Their son’s name pays homage to Phoenix’s older brother, who died from overdose at the age of 23.
Both Mara and Phoenix are vegan and reside in the Hollywood Hills with River and their two dogs, Soda and Oskar.
Motherhood seems to have brought some stability and purpose to Mara’s life, especially as she gushed so heavily about her first-ever Mother’s Day in 2021.
“As a new mom, Mother’s Day has taken on a special meaning this year. Raising our baby, River, has opened my heart to a whole new life filled with hope and more determination than ever to create a kinder and more sustainable world,” she wrote as part of the Farm Sanctuary’s Mother’s Day campaign, which PEOPLE reported.
Phoenix and Mara Set To Appear in ‘Polaris’ Together
Before her role in La Cocina, Mara appeared in 2022’s Women Talking, inspired by Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name. It follows a group of women belonging to a Mennonite community in Bolivia who fear for their futures as they learn of the dark history surrounding the colony.
As for Phoenix, he embodied Napoleon Bonaparte in the biographical drama Napoleon, but the world waits with bated breath for the release of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Todd Phillips’ widely successful standalone film from 2019. Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, joined by megastar Lady Gaga as the Joker’s sidekick, Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn.
The couple will reunite on-screen once more in the upcoming film Polaris, directed by Lynne Ramsay.
