LeBron and Bronny James won’t be able to enjoy their historic achievement as the first father-son duo to play together in a regular season NBA game. Just a day after the momentous feat, the duo was named in a lawsuit over a 2022 car crash.
LeBron and Bronny are being sued by two Los Angeles-based plaintiffs named April Almanza Lopez and Kiara Rae McGillen. In the court documents, Lopez and McGillen accused the basketballer duo of rear-ending them during a drive on the highway. The incident happened on November 13, 2022, in Littlerock, California. It is unsure why the plaintiffs waited for almost a year before taking legal action. They claim the injuries sustained require further medical assistance, which they want the Lakers players to cover. Lopez and McGillen also alleged that the vehicle they drove lost value due to damages suffered. They are asking for an unspecified amount of damages.
The plaintiffs seemed quite intentional with the timing of the lawsuit. Per TMZ, they filed just hours before LeBron and Bronny took to the court at Crypto.com Arena for the Lakers game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Fans Defend LeBron & Bronny James Against Lawsuit
With the Lakers defeating the Timberwolves 110 to 103, further cementing LeBron and Bronny’s victory, fans are angered by the lawsuit. Many tagged it as flimsy, accusing the plaintiffs of trying to profit off the father-son duo’s success. “Convenient timing, lol. People gotta just start working, man,” one fan wrote, while another user penned:
“Suing both just screams extortion. Only one of them could have been driving. Doubtful either one was.”
Another comment read, “2 Years later? They just want a bag now that Bronny is an NBA player, too.” A fourth user wrote, “Seems like Karen’s trying to get some cash. Why wait 2 years after it happened to sue, but all sudden, you’re doing it now?” LeBron and Bronny have yet to address the saga, but they have clearly won in the court of public opinion.
