As Prince Harry’s relationship with his brother Prince William worsens, insiders weigh in on how the late Princess Diana would have handled the Megxit controversy. May 2024 particularly put the spotlight on the already collapsing family dynamics of the British royals even as several key members battle health issues. Just when it seemed Kate Middleton and King Charles’ respective diagnosis would be the bridge that finally cemented that rift, the royals made a public show of just how deep their grievances ran.
First, Prince Harry’s visit to the UK for the Invictus Games 10th anniversary did not end with the prince’s reunion with his dad as many had hoped. Instead, Harry sent out a statement confirming the king was too busy to see him, despite being less than three miles away.
On the same day, King Charles appointed Prince William to a military role many deemed would have fallen to Harry had Megxit never happened. Then there was the Nigerian trip, multiple royal appointments, and countless comments from royal experts sharing their ideas of the dysfunctional royal family dynamics.
The Spencers Pick Side In the “Megxit” Controversy
In all of these, one thing stood out, though. While alone at St Paul’s Cathedral with no member of the royal fold backing him during the Invictus Games anniversary, Prince Harry found consolation in the presence of his mom, Princess Diana’s siblings. Notably, Earl Spencer and Lady Jane Fellowes turned up for Prince Harry on May 8, ensuring he had family on hand amid the royal snub. Royal author, Tom Quinn believes the presence of Diana’s siblings meant the Spensers already picked a side in the ongoing feud. He noted,
“The fact that the Spencers were out in force for Harry on this visit speaks volumes about where their loyalties lie. Like Harry, the Spencers still view the royal family, to some extent, as the adversary.”
Princess Diana’s Former Butler Reveals Where She Stands In Royal Feud
Explaining further, Quinn pointed out how Earl Spencer always criticized the way the then-Prince Charles and the royal family treated his sister, Diana. Although Charles and Diana eventually divorced, the death of the People’s Princess in 1997, barely a year later, only fueled those grievances. Regardless, Princess Diana’s former Butler Paul Burrell believes the Stance of the Spencers is reflective of where the late princess would have stood in the whole Megxit controversy.
According to him, Princess Diana would have been devastated to watch her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry drift apart. Even worse, she would never have let things reach a point where Harry and Meghan would resort to attacking “a crown her eldest son would one day wear.” On the contrary, the onetime future queen would have foreseen the controversy, and nipped it in the bud. He divulged,
“She would have seen this starting, and she would have stopped it.”
Without their mom Princess Diana in the picture, though, the royal brothers Prince William and Prince Harry remain estranged. This mostly has to do with the Spare author’s attack on his older brother in the memoir, his Netflix documentary and the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview. These days, William turns more to Queen Camilla, who Harry famously tagged “the third person” in his parent’s marriage,” reechoing his mom’s statement. As it appears, where Princess Diana would have mediated with love and unity, Camilla has all but remained a bystander, letting the rift between the brothers go unchecked — a big disservice to the beloved People’s Princess.
