Selena Gomez is breaking her silence on Tony Hinchcliffe’s Puerto Rico “Garbage” joke. The singer recently revealed how the racist joke told at Donald Trump‘s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday made her feel.
Gomez was joined by her Emilia Perez co-star Zoe Saldana as they spoke to Variety Magazine about the hateful rhetoric Trump and his allies push concerning the Latina community. “[I] strongly disagreed with any comments that were made recently. I definitely want to stand by my people,” the Disney alum said of Hinchcliffe’s remarks. The Rare Beauty explained that instances like this are why she uploaded a video of her voting to her followers. “People can sometimes forget that the one vote can change everything,” she shared. Gomez’s co-star, Saldana, also had a similar reaction.
“It’s sad that today, 2024, there’s just so much poverty in character on so many people that we misname as leaders,” the Colombiana star said. “We have to pick leaders that really represent who we are as human beings.”
Did Selena Gomez Vote For Kamala Harris or Donald Trump?
Days earlier, Gomez took to TikTok to document her early voting process. The actress was on her way to the premiere of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place dressed to the nines. She cast her vote in a dashing, sparkly red dress with a sweetheart neckline that flaunted her cleavage. She paired the outfit with matching sequin heels, with her hair styled in a medium-length bob. “I’m sure that sucker’s in,” she gushed about her vote before dropping it in the ballot box. Although Gomez didn’t reveal who she voted for, she attached a blue heart emoji to a photo of her by the ballot box, signifying she was for the Democratic Party.
In addition, the former child star has actively spoken against Trump’s campaign. In September, she mocked Republican VP candidate JD Vance’s infamous “childless cat lady” comment at the Emmys.
