The Weeknd Defends The Idol Sex Scenes
The Weeknd had a heart-to-heart conversation with GQ. Though the interview was conducted over the phone, he was as truthful as can be. He glided into the controversy of the day, referencing the Basic Instinct joke in episode 1.
First, the actor clarified that it was inspired by the film, a sexual thriller made famous in the 90s. Contrary to what fans would have expected, the co-creator maintained that there is nothing overly raunchy about the performance. He agreed that the series portends some sexy scenes, but other hilarious moments mitigate them.
Rather than fault the sex scenes between Tedros and Jocelyn, he punches a hole in the former’s personality, claiming he is self-aware and unsure at the same time. In his words:
“However you’re feeling watching that scene…it’s all those emotions adding up to: This guy is way over his head, this situation is one where he is not supposed to be here.”
This is not the first time the series has been criticized. Earlier in March, Rolling Stone condemned the creation, calling it “torture porn.” During a press briefing, Levinson, The Weeknd, and Depp addressed the situation. The Idol‘s Jocelyn actress confirmed that the story was not poking fun at any artist in particular, even though there is a similarity between her onscreen lifestyle and that of Britney Spears. Her co-star emphasized that the story was a culmination of his experiences and others around him. Levinson nailed the coffin by affirming that nothing will stop them in their course – no controversy or backlash.
This may be bad news for lovers of The Weeknd because the artist does not intend to give up his controversial role on The Idol. So, there are two options available to fans: discontinue watching the series or carry on, enjoying the ride and seeing how the story unfolds.
